Experience a fully equipped etching studio with a Master Printer. Simon has over 30 years of experience in the printmaking industry at the highest level with 15 years running the Royal Academy Schools Etching department as the Etching Tutor.

​

What to expect from the day:

  • Start the day with a coffee and an introduction to the studio.

  • An opportunity to look at examples of prints that have been produced in the studio with artists including Tracie Emin, Grayson Perry and Paul Noble.

  • A look at materials paper and tools.

  • An opportunity to try some drypoint.

  • An overview of processes with examples including hard and soft ground and the uses of aquatint and associated processes such as sugar lift.

  • Simon will take you through the process of drawing on a prepared copper plate and biting it in acid.

  • A short break for lunch

  • A relaxed afternoon printing the plates that were produced in the morning.

  • The afternoon will draw to a close taking a look at the prints produced over tea and cake.

Bespoke Sessions

Sessions from two hours to a full day designed to explore the many possibilities of etching on copper with a focus on individual support and developement. Having discussed in advance with Simon, the time will be organised to acheive your personal and professional objectives where possible.

Possilities:

  • Soft ground : how to apply the ground and use effectively.

  • Hard ground : how to apply the ground and use effectively.

  • Taking an image further with aquatint.

  • Hand applied aquatints, sugar lift and spit-bite.

  • Chin collé and how to use effectively.

  • Alternative wiping methods and their uses.

  • Using scrapers, burnishers, roulette wheels and drypoint tools.

  • Multi-plate etching.

  • Producing gallery ready prints.

  • How to print a clean and consistent edition.

Two hours - £150
Half day - (3 hours :10-1pm) £300
Full day  - (6 hours :10-4.30 incl.30mins lunch) £500
